    Paving Overlay

    Asphalt Paving Overlay

    Before applying an asphalt pavement overlay, repair damaged or distressed areas in the existing pavement. An "asphalt overlay" is the paving of a second layer of asphalt over existing asphalt. An asphalt overlay can be done when the existing asphalt is in overall good condition but may have some problem areas. Depending on the degree of cracking, crumbling or sunken areas, those areas can be cut out, patched and then a new layer can be paved. An asphalt pavement overlay should NEVER be done on a driveway or parking lot that is severely cracked, crumbling, wavy or has sinking, soft spots. The new layer of asphalt will follow the old asphalt cracks (reflective cracking) and waves in a very short period of time. Unfortunately, every year we replace recently asphalt overlaid driveways that less reputable contractors have resurfaced. Sadly, once they have cashed your check, they will never return to rectify any problems.


    When an asphalt pavement surface deteriorates to the point of needing repair, an asphalt overlay is an effective solution. The thickness of an overlay is typically 1 1/2 to 3 inches.


    Most any project is a candidate for overlay if the existing base is stable and the asphalt pavement is structurally sound.

    Why are asphalt repairs necessary?


    Asphalt repairs are necessary within time as newly applied asphalt surfaces begin to wear and break down as they are repeatedly exposed to elements such as water, sunlight and chemicals. The liquid asphalt that binds the materials together begins to lose its natural resistance to water, allowing it to penetrate beneath the surface. Once this occurs the pavement can quickly fall prey to a number of different types of deterioration including cracks and potholes. Asphalt repairs and prevention will increase the longevity of any asphalt surface.

    • If pavement repairs or pavement patching is required for more than twenty-five percent (25%)of the entire pavement area it will be more economical to overlay the entire surface.


    • Any area of the surface that is either "heaved up" or "depressed down" should be completely reconstructed by your asphalt company starting from the base.


    • Was the pavement designed for the loads it is carrying? A good example is when the asphalt company designer forgot about garbage truck loads or did not anticipate the size or number of delivery trucks. Maybe only that area will need to be reconstructed to support the heavier load.

    Pothole Repairs

    Potholes are created when moisture seeps into the pavement, gets cold, expands and then thaws. This weakens the pavement. Traffic loosens it even more, and it eventually crumbles and pops out.


    Pothole repairs are performed by removing out the damaged asphalt with a jackhammer or masonry saw to create a neat rectangle. When the excess asphalt is removed, an adhesive is applied and asphalt is added in layers. It is leveled off and compacted with a pavement roller.


    Six Steps to long lasting Pothole Repair:

    • Set up traffic control measures.

      Depending on the class of highway, crews need the protection of correct signing, flaggers, or other traffic control.


    • Mark the area to remove.

      Crews use paint to mark a straight-sided rectangle or polygon. Lines should delineate the pavement surrounding the pothole.


    • Prepare the pothole.

      Remove damaged material to reach a firm base and make certain the remaining material is sound and free of cracks.


    • Apply tack to sides and bottom.

      Immediately before filling, the crew hot mops, pours, or sprays a tack coat onto the sides and bottom of the pothole.


    • Place layers of HMA, lift above the surrounding pavement.

      Crews should layer filler four inches at a time and compact each layer. Compacting "reduces the ability of water to penetrate.


    • Seal the edges of the patch.

      To reduce water penetration, crews should seal patch edges with a sand or chip seal.



    Pothole Repair Failures:

    • Lack of adhesion to the sides or bottom of the repair. Lack of adhesion can lead to cracking. When water gets into cracks, freezing action may dislodge the repair.


    • Dishing. Dishing is surface settling that results when the repair mix is inadequately compacted.


    • Pushing or shoving of the patching mix. Pushing or shoving has several possible causes: "inadequate shearing resistance in the mix or a poorly compacted mix, the bleeding of tack or liquid asphalt to the upper portion of the repair, or a poorly designed mix."


    • Loss of material through raveling, delamination of the patching mix, and drainage failures. Raveling is losing material from the surface of the repair and may result from a variety of causes, such as inadequate cohesion within the repair mix or poor compacting.


    • Other causes of premature pothole repair failure are: reflective cracking, delamination, and poor drainage: Reflective cracking is cracking that originates in old, underlying pavement and continues into the patch. Delamination is the peeling away of thin overlays of asphalt concrete from the surface of the roadway due to poor adhesion. And poor drainage becomes a factor when the pothole repair is in a low-lying area, where it remains constantly wet and water damage results.
