The Importance of Parking Lot Safety Devices

From directional signs to pedestrian crossing signs there are hundreds of different types of parking lot safety signs and devices from which to choose. Here are a few of the more important and more commonly used parking lot safety devices:

Bollards

A bollard is a short, vertical post installed to control road traffic. Bollards can be manufactured and installed to withstand significant vehicle impacts and used as visual barriers as well. Often facilities will place bollards in front of a building entrance, in front of electrical equipment or other facility structure to prevent cars from ramming into the building thereby preventing access and/or destroying property.

Speed Bumps and Humps

Speed bumps and humps come in a variety of materials to prevent traffic or individual vehicles from gaining excess speed. Speed humps and bumps are known as traffic calming devices that use vertical deflection to slow motor-vehicle traffic to improve safety conditions.

Parking Stops or Parking Curbs

When a visitor pulls into a parking lot stall, often facilities have placed a parking stop or parking curb at the head end of the parking spot. This helps drivers know how far they should pull into a space and also prevents them from pulling in to far, or from running off the pavement into a ditch or other road hazard. Usually, these parking space safety devices are painted white or yellow for extra visibility. Some facilities will paint handicapped parking curbs blue to clearly define the space as well.

Pavement Markings

There are numerous types of pavement markings that you see every day in a parking lot and many are so common that you probably no longer even see them – they just seem to blend into the background. Some of these important safety devices include turn arrows, stop lines, cross walks, one way designations, fire lanes and handicapped space designators. Local building and zoning codes will define which pavement markings your facility is legally required to have. Your paving contractor will be up to snuff on code requirements and help to keep you compliant.
