In the United States, we’ve been using asphalt pavement since the 1800s. In Europe, they’ve been using it even longer – since the 1700s. Despite it’s widespread and longtime use, there are a number of misconceptions about asphalt and sealcoating.
Is Asphalt Durable?
THE MYTH: No, it’s not.
THE REALITY: While the lifespan of asphalt pavement depends on the quality of the initial install, the maintenance over the pavements life and the amount of wear and tear, asphalt is very durable. A properly installed and maintained asphalt pavement can last 25 years or more.
Isn’t Sealcoating Just Aesthetic?
THE MYTH: Yes, it is.
THE REALITY: While it’s true that newly sealcoated asphalt parking lots look fantastic, the truth is sealcoating provides so much more than an appearance boost. Sealcoating prevents the damaging effects of oxidation and water penetration. The sun’s ultraviolet rays harden and dry out the surface of asphalt. Regularly applying sealcoating prevents oxidation. Asphalt sealcoating also resists the highly damaging effects of gas and oil seepage and all other road chemicals.
Is Asphalt Sustainable?
THE MYTH: No, it’s not.
THE REALITY: Asphalt requires less energy and fewer natural resources to manufacture than any other paving material. Plus, it’s one of them most recycled materials in the United States.
Is Asphalt Bad for the Environment?
THE MYTH: Yes, it is.
THE REALITY: While asphalt does not leach any contaminants into the soil, often it is blamed for contaminating water supplies through run-off. The reality is that this contamination is not from the asphalt itself, but from other sources, for example: trash left by humans in parking lots, gas and oil that has leaked out of cars, and organic debris not properly disposed of by maintenance personnel. Keeping your parking lot clean by contracting with a sweeping company will help avoid run-off contaminating water supplies.
